Kind of, sort of. I finished anyways..

I barely made it through Day 1 of Week 1. Tuesday, I laced my sneakers, headed to the Y, mentally prepared myself and started. Everything was going along just dandy, until the 10 minute mark.

Yes, the 10 minute mark. While I wasn’t out of breath, my shins started killing me. I was certain my legs were going to just snap right at the shins and I would fall flat on my face while the treadmill just kept going and going.

That’s not what happened though. I grimaced my way through the entire thing (though I will admit during one of the intervals, I walked an extra 30 seconds or so instead of getting right back to the jog).

I’m proud of myself, but hating my shins. I stretched beforehand, took the jogs slow, but it didn’t seem to matter. I did jump on the recliner bike right after and my shins felt fine. I’ve never had a problem with them on the elliptical either.

After asking around, googling and doing a little WebMD research, I learned women are more susceptible to shin splints than men because of their arches. And that I need to be doing exercises to build up the muscles around my shins and calves. And that I need to ice my shins after every run (or in my case, attempt at running). And that I more than likely need to purchase new shoes. (what? The crosstrainers I have aren’t really good for running?? Ohhhh….)

So, after I purchase a new pair of shoes this weekend, I am going to tackle the C25K beast once more.

In order to nurse the wounds of my failed attempt, I did manage to Shred (yesterday) and will be on the elliptical tonight. I’m also trying to stay positive that I wasn’t out of breath and that things have to improve…right??

GOOD FOR YOU! You kept at it, that's GREAT! Maybe if you got inserts for your shoes, a higher arch support? I have really high arches and I have some for my shoes and they help a lot. Keeping going, your doing a really good job!

OMG, I admire anyone who can run. I am soooo not a runner.

When I started C25K, I thought I was going to die. Literally. But it is a great program to ease into running. I suggest that you invest in a good pair of running shoes... and to do that, go to a running store and get fitted. It's done wonders for me.
